About the Chip & Toner Level Display
Each cartridge includes an integrated chip for automatic printer recognition. Because these are remanufactured cartridges with aftermarket chips, your HP printer may display a "low toner" or "toner level unknown" warning after installation. This is normal — the cartridge is full and will continue printing reliably. Simply dismiss the alert and monitor your actual print quality instead of the on-screen indicator.
How to Install HP 58A Toner Cartridge
- Open the front or top cover of your HP LaserJet Pro M404 or M428 printer
- Pull the old toner cartridge straight out by its handle
- Remove the new cartridge from packaging and shake it gently 5–6 times side to side to evenly distribute the toner
- Pull the orange tab to remove the sealing strip completely
- Slide the cartridge firmly into the slot until it clicks
- Close the cover and power on
- If a "non-HP cartridge" or "low toner" alert appears, press OK or Continue to proceed
Do not touch the drum or chip contacts. Fingerprints can cause print defects or recognition errors.
